Board Of Nursing - Where Nurses Express Their Voices

My Road To A Nursing Career

Growing up in a remote village of Thailand, I would never imagine my life as a nurse working in an American hospital.

Here is my story.

I enjoyed spending time with my grandfather rubbing his back, giving him a message after hard work in a rice field.  I found it very rewarding to make my grandfather feel good.  I was happy when he told me how great I was as massager.

Making people feeling better is my one of my thing.  I thing this is why I chose to become a nurse.

I quit school after I finish 3rd year of elementary school (equivallence to 9th grade).  My mom died accidentally and my dad was in prison.  I couldn't afford going to school since my sister had already started the college.

I left home and found a job in a plastic factory earning $2.00 a day.  I saved money and send home to my little brother who lived with my grandfather.

I realized working in a plastic factory wouldn't get me far, I tried looking for other job.  One of my co-worker suggested me working in a pub serving drink.  The money was better than my factory work.  I met many interesting guests and I learned to speak English with them.

I started going to school at night to get my GED and study some more English.  In 1990, I got a chance to come to America.  I went to Community College to learn some more Advanced English.  It took me two years.  Then I enrolled in Arts and Science Programe.

To make a story short, I'm very blessed and fortunate.  I finished BS in nursing from University of Maryland in 1996.  I was 24 then.

Fron then on I began my nursing career and enjoy working ever since.

That's my story.  Now tell Yours!
